“These inspections are yielding results,” Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik (Maceij Vonsikas) told public radio on Thursday.
For the first time, Poland introduced border controls with Slovakia on October 4. Initially, the inspections were carried out for 10 days, but were later extended for another 20 days, until November 2.
The move comes in response to a recent surge in migrants and asylum seekers in Slovakia, mostly from Serbia via Hungary to wealthier Western European countries.
A new decree signed by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mariusz Kaminskis, came into effect on Thursday, extending the inspections again until November 22.
According to the regulation, the border with Slovakia can be crossed at eight road, three railway and 11 pedestrian crossings, but it cannot be crossed at places such as trails in the Tatra Mountains.
The Polish government says its decisions to tighten controls are in line with the Schengen code and are aimed at curbing the flow of illegal migrants entering Europe via the so-called Balkan route.
The Czech Republic announced a similar decision on Wednesday.
