Teaching’s Second Act: Education Minister Issues Heartfelt Plea to Lure Retirees Back to the Classroom

The Minister of Education, Hector Rodriguezsigned a resolution this Tuesday inviting retired teachers to return to the classrooms to teach again. The goal is to ensure that students have all their teachers, especially in the subjects of mathematics, physics and chemistry.

The call is for retired teachers and those on secondment.

Rodríguez emphasized that there are some difficulties in covering subjects such as mathematics, chemistry and physics.

In this sense, the need arises to ensure that young people have all their teachers and a complete schedule.

Likewise, he gave the order that all teachers who are on secondment, performing functions in an institution other than their usual one, return to their schools to teach classes.

The main task we have is to guarantee quality education, inclusive and for everyone, but the main difficulty to achieve that objective is our own bureaucracy, the functioning of the Ministry«, he indicated.

Benefits for teachers

It is worth remembering that on September 30, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, offered a package of aid for public sector teachers and called on them to return to the classrooms, from which thousands of teachers have withdrawn in the recent years due to low wages and poor working conditions.

On that occasion, the president detailed that there are eight fronts of action established to improve the quality of life and work of Venezuelan teachers, since in many institutions teachers only attend two or three days a week, dedicating the rest of the time to other activities that generate greater income.

However, the Government has not clarified whether this aid plan includes a salary increase for teachers, which has been the main reason for the protests of this union in the last eight years. According to estimates, thousands of teachers have left the country due to the economic crisis.

The Center for Documentation and Social Analysis of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (Cendas-FVM) estimated that the average monthly salary of a teacher is approximately 21 dollars at the official exchange rate, which is considered insufficient to cover the cost of the basket. basic food, which according to the organization was calculated at 107.8 dollars per person in August.
