Apple’s Indonesian Leap: iPhone 16 Awaits TKDN Clearance as Ministry Holds Out for Investment Commitment

Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of Industry (Menperin) stated that the extension of the domestic component level certificate (TKDN) for technology company Apple is still waiting for the realization of the corporate investment, so that it can sell its iPhone 16 products in Indonesia.

“Previously, Apple was able to sell its products in Indonesia because they had received a TKDN certificate. However, the validity period of the certificate has expired, so it must be extended. “And, currently the TKDN certificate extension process is still waiting for additional investment realization from Apple,” said Agus Minister of Industry in Jakarta, Tuesday (8/10/2024) as reported by Between.

The Minister of Industry stated that Apple’s investment realization in Indonesia was still relatively small, namely only IDR 1.48 trillion. According to him, this value is small compared to the large number of products from this large company from the United States to the domestic market.

Apart from that, he said that Apple had committed to increasing investment realization up to IDR 1.71 trillion. “So, there is still a gap of around IDR 240 billion,” said the Minister of Industry.

He said that if the investment commitment is realized, Apple will get a TKDN value of 40 percent, so that the iPhone 16 cell phone and Apple products that use cellular networks can enter the Indonesian market.

“This is all on the basis fairness and fair to investors who already have a high commitment to investing capital in Indonesia,” he said.

Furthermore, he explained that based on Minister of Industry Regulation Number 29 of 2017 concerning Provisions and Procedures for Calculating the Value of Domestic Components for Cellular Telephone, Handheld Computer and Tablet Computer Products, TKDN calculations can be done using three schemes.

These schemes are making products domestically (manufacturing), making applications domestically, or developing innovations domestically. In this case, the scheme used by Apple is through an innovation development scheme.

Previously, the newest product, the iPhone 16, whose official sales opened on September 20 2024, could not enter Indonesia, because the smartphone made by the leading technology company Apple did not meet the TKDN of 40 percent.

The Ministry of Industry stated that products that have a TKDN and a company benefit weight (BMP) above 40 percent have the requirements to be purchased. Especially in the procurement of goods and services by the government, BUMN, BUMD and the private sector using APBN/APBD or exploiting resources controlled by the state.

Currently, in Indonesia there are three Apple Academies in Tangerang, Sidoarjo and Batam. Apart from that, during the visit of Apple CEO Tim Cook to Indonesia in April 2024, he stated that his party would soon open the fourth Apple Academy in Bali. (ant/nis/bil/faz)
