Mexico City Reform Rebuff Sets Stage for Sheinbaum’s Leadership Litmus Test

Mexico City.― Ricardo Monrealcoordinator of the deputies of Morenaconfirmed that the ruling for reducing the work day to 40 hours was scrapped.

And it’s just this October 1st Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo listed in his 100 government commitments the promise to approve the constitutional reform for reduce the working day from 48 to 40 hours in Mexico.

Monreal clarified that at the end of the previous Legislature, all the unapproved initiatives were discarded and for the new period in Congress only the package of 20 proposed reforms constitutional February 5 by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

And now? The Zacatecas legislator said that the legislative process will have to start again and pointed out that it must be defined whether the initiative will be sent again by the President of the Republic herself or if the members of Morena will have the task of preparing it.

Monreal explained that, following the instructions of Claudia Sheinbaum, the 40-hour work week will be deliberated again, which will be gradual, and in consensus with businessmen.

“He issued a position and one of his points is that Let’s start deliberating the 40 hour week. We are waiting if you send us an initiative or we will formulate it here, but it is good news,” said the deputy about the speech in which the president committed to making this labor reform a reality.

In December 2023, the ruling to reduce the working day was approved in the Constitutional Points Commission in the Chamber of Deputies and sent to the Plenary Session, however, the Board of Directors decided to lower it at the last minute after López Obrador suggested that legislators not rush and open the debate to new forums with the private sector and worker unions.
