Equinor Takes the Leap: Spearheading the Danish Offshore Wind Energy Surge

In total, Norway’s largest company has purchased 41,197,344 shares, corresponding to 9.8 percent of Ørsted shares, Equinor states in a stock exchange announcement.

The Danish state still holds a controlling stake in the company.

– Equinor has a long-term perspective and will be a supportive owner in Ørsted. This is a counter-cyclical investment in a leading player with an attractive portfolio in offshore wind, says Anders Opedal, CEO of Equinor.

He adds that the investment is in line with Equinor’s strategy in renewable energy. In total, the company spends almost NOK 27 billion on Danish offshore wind with the Ørsted investment.

– The offshore wind industry is now facing some challenges, but we are convinced that the sector will be strengthened through these, and that offshore wind will play a decisive role in the energy transition, says Opedal.

The price of the Equinor share falls after the news became known, but analyst John Olaisen speaks up Today’s Business that he doesn’t think it’s a stupid investment.

– The Equinor share is falling a little, but Ørsted is cheap and the share price is still quite low, even if it has risen a little. Equinor should be an offshore wind giant, and it will be with Ørsted.
