Tunisia – The Sigma Conseil Foundation, an opinion poll in Tunisia, announced that estimates indicate that current President Kais Saied will win a second term in the elections that took place on Sunday, with 89.2 percent of the voters’ votes.
This was stated by Hassan Al-Zarqouni, director of the Sigma Conseil Opinion Survey office, in an interview on Tunisian state television.
Al-Zarqouni said, “The estimated results reached by Sigma Conseil indicate that Kais Saied won the presidential elections by 89.2 percent, with a number of votes amounting to two million 194 thousand and 150 votes.”
To win a five-year presidential term, three candidates competed in these elections: the outgoing President Kais Saied, the Secretary-General of the “Sha’ab” Movement, Zuhair Al-Maghzawi (a supporter of Saied), and the Secretary-General of the “Azmoun” Movement, Al-Ayachi Zamal (opposition).
Al-Zarqouni added, “The candidate Al-Zamal received 6.9 percent, with a number of votes amounting to 169,727 votes, while the candidate Al-Maghzawi received 3.9 percent, with a number of votes amounting to 95,933 votes.”
On the other hand, Zammal’s campaign said in a statement: “National Television, in partnership with a well-known private opinion polling institution, which is an unofficial institution, published the results of an alleged poll on the results of the presidential elections, in violation of the provisions of the law and with the aim of directing public opinion towards accepting certain results.”
The campaign expressed its “categorical rejection” of the published results, explaining that it is “awaiting the priority results” of the elections.
The campaign said that it is “completely confident that candidate Ayachi Zamal will pass to the second round.”
It is noteworthy that Zamal was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison on charges of “forging recommendations” in his candidacy file.
Earlier on Sunday, the Independent High Authority for Elections in Tunisia announced that the initial turnout in the presidential elections reached 27.7 percent by the time polls closed at 6 p.m. local time (17.00 GMT).
The head of the commission, Farouk Bouaskar, said in a press conference in the capital, Tunis, that “the electoral process ran smoothly and we did not record any event that would disturb the peace of this election day, and the turnout of Tunisians at polling stations at home and abroad was respectable.”
He added: “Two million 704 thousand and 155 voters participated in the voting process today, with an initial turnout rate of 27.7 percent.”
He explained that “the official and final percentages of participation will be announced in conjunction with the announcement of the preliminary results of the elections on Monday evening.”
On Sunday morning, voting began in Tunisia to choose a president for a five-year term, while elections began abroad on Friday in 59 countries.
