Biden Navigates Middle East Minefield as Iran-Israel Rivalry Reaches Boiling Point

Washington.-The president of the United States, Joe Biden, assured that it is possible to avoid an all-out war in the Middle East, while Israel evaluates its response to a missile attack by Iran.

“I don’t think there is going to be a total war. I think we can avoid it,” Biden said during a press conference at the White House. The president stressed that “there is still much to do” to reduce tension in the region.

Asked about US military support for Israel, Biden responded emphatically: “We have already helped them. “We are going to protect Israel.”

The US administration has reinforced its support for Benjamin Netanyahu’s government since hostilities broke out on October 7 following the massive attack by Hamas and other Palestinian factions against Israeli territory.

Earlier, Biden said that he is talking to Israel about the possibility of attacking Iran’s oil facilities, in retaliation for the bombardment that Tehran launched on Tuesday with nearly 200 missiles on Jewish territory.

The US president made these statements to the press on the south lawn of the White House, before boarding the Marine One helicopter to travel to the states of Florida and Georgia and inspect the damage caused by Hurricane Helene.

Before boarding the helicopter, a journalist asked him if he would “support” Israel attacking Iran’s oil facilities, to which Biden responded: “We are discussing that.”

In response to questions from another journalist, Biden stated that Israel will not take any retaliatory action this Thursday.

“First of all, it is not that we do not allow Israel to do anything, but that the United States is limited to giving advice. And nothing is going to happen today,” said Biden, referring to the country that is his greatest ally in the Middle East and to which he is his largest supplier of weapons.

The president of the United States told reporters on Wednesday that he will not support an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities in retaliation for attacks by the Persian regime.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Army promised this Thursday that it will continue to deal “hard blows” to Hezbollah in Lebanon, where its troops are engaged in ground combat supported by aircraft attacks against militants of the terrorist movement.

After an offensive of intense bombings against the pro-Iran organization in Lebanon, which killed several leaders of the armed organization, according to the Lebanese authorities, Israel began ground incursions in the south on Monday.

Israeli aviation attacked “the intelligence headquarters” of the movement on Thursday, on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital, the army announced.

The American news site Axios claims, citing three official Israeli sources, that the target of the attack was Hashem Safieddine, the possible successor to Hassan Nasrallah, assassinated a week ago.

Hezbollah claimed for its part that an attack hit a warehouse near the Beirut airport and a source close to the movement reported up to 11 consecutive bombings in the south of the capital, a stronghold of this organization, overnight.

Almost a year after the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, Israel announced in mid-September that the “center of gravity” of the conflict had shifted north, to the Lebanese border.

Israel affirms that it seeks to weaken Hezbollah to allow the return of tens of thousands of people displaced since the Islamist movement began launching projectiles into the north of its territory a year ago in support of Hamas.Infobae.
