Benítez Soars to New Heights as Toluca’s Hero with Stunning Two-Goal Masterstroke

Toluca.- Without putting up much resistance, the Leones Negros lost 1-3 in Toluca to fall to the last place in the Relegation Table, where they were barely surpassed by Puebla and Chivas, who at some point during the start of the tournament have also occupied the bottom, in addition of Veracruz. The Red Devils took advantage of the visitor’s fragility and with goals from Paraguayan Édgar Benítez and Gerardo Rodríguez added merits to vindicate themselves with their fans after an irregular start to the campaign.

Now, the scarlets have climbed to fourth place in the general classification and aim to improve the outlook for what they still lack in the squad where the Colombian Wilder Guisao made his debut this afternoon and to which his injured countryman, Víctor Montaño, must return.

A strong first half was enough for Toluca to resolve the duel, since the Lions only showed momentum and danger in the second half, but almost always without success.

At 26′, Benítez made it 1-0 in the small area against a sleeping Guadalajara defense, which never rejected a center shot from Carlos Esquivel.

Although the “Pájaro” cut what seemed like his second at 28′, Rodríguez made it 2-0 with the defense’s seal at 36′, when he defined a “crack” pass from Paulo da Silva with his left foot.

With that score as china, the Lions began to show signs of desperation. But neither the claims nor the dramatized falls had any effect like the entry of Andrés Ríos for the complement.

The Colombian revolutionized his squad, while Toluca maneuvered to overcome the match.

Ríos sent a shot to the crossbar at 52′, but the Devils also had other attempts where goalkeeper Humberto Hernández became the hero, against shots from Esquivel and Jerónimo Amione, the latter who returned after being separated from the squad for a couple of days due to indiscipline.

The match only had a brief period of tension after Fidel Martínez’s great free kick goal that brought the long-haired team closer in the 85th minute. However, Benítez cooled the visitors’ enthusiasm with the score 3-1 one minute from the end to leave Toluca with 7 points, close to the leaders.

Contrary to them, the Lions will have to think about their 4 units and their status as bottom in the Relegation Table, with a percentage of 1.00, lower than 1.0112 for Puebla, 1.0674 for Chivas and 1.0727 for Veracruz.
