Upper Austria’s traditional metal scene is “alive” again thanks to Kaplinz’s Steel City Sorcery series. I’ve been following Austria’s underground music scene for more than 15 years, but at that time only a few organizers dared to book a band from the Keep It True lineup for Escape Metalcorner in Vienna. However, an orchestra had never performed in Austria – until the idea came up Chiris grows Booking their first and only show in Austria. The sound of “GATES OF LONDRA” leans more in the direction of post-punk and darkwave, with its simple guitar riffs and harsh black metal vocals. However, the ubiquitous computer sound of drums, at least rhythmically “tighter” than Lars Ulrich, tested my patience in the long run. The use of drum and flute sounds as a ritual performance element may have appealed to some Black Dragon fans.
The show was met with mixed reactions from some audience members, and the tension ahead of the night’s main act was palpable. A large group of fans had already lined up in front of the hall, wanting to sit in the front row. Next up is “Blood & Iron” and “Chaos Descends” from the 80s album One Foot In Hell. “Frost And Fire” impresses with catchy lyrics and clean guitar riffs, while the dark “Black Machine” creates a heavy atmosphere. New song “Looking Glass” and last album’s title track “Forever Black” shine with a heavy doom sound that’s especially effective in live performances.
Tim Baker didn’t hold back on his announcement, and was clearly thrilled by the crowd’s reaction in the intimate club atmosphere, as he’s rarely been so close to the crowd. His long-time colleague Robert Garven also excelled on drums and gave the live lineup the rights to continue operating under the name CIRITH UNGOL. NIGHT DEMON’s core lineup consists of bassist Jarvis Leatherby and guitarist Armand Anthony playing strings, performing their idol’s songs with heart.
With “Master of the Pit” and “King of the Dead” the band returned to the soup of legendary CIRITH UNGOL originals, which impressed with their brilliant song structures and long instrumental passages . The band did not leave the small stage before the encore, followed by “Down Below.” This always prestigious old school metal show culminates with “Death Of The Sun” and ends perfectly with the band’s anthem “Join The Legion”.
