Wistron Corporation has approved the sale of its iPhone factory in India to the Tata Group.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), said that a Tata Group company will start manufacturing iPhones in India for the local and global markets.
The IT minister has shared a statement from the Taiwan-based company, according to which Wistron’s board has approved the sale of Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd to Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd for $125 million.
Wistron did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Apple is touting India as a major contributor to its growth as the company looks to shift some production out of China.

Technology giant Apple began assembling iPhones in the country in 2017 with Wistron, which has since extended contracts with companies such as FoxPhone and Pegatron Corp.
In December 2020, Wistron was forced to shut down its plant in Narasapura, Karnataka state for three months after workers damaged property during a protest over non-payment of salaries, causing millions of dollars in losses.
