The largest human rights association in Morocco corresponds with Akhannouch and Bourita regarding the Moroccans of Lebanon, and demands urgent interventions to evacuate them.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights called on the government to intervene to enable Moroccan citizens stranded in the territory of the Lebanese Republic to return to the homeland, in light of the continuing Israeli bombing of this country.

In an open letter addressed to both Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, the association reviewed “the suffering of many Moroccan citizens stranded in Lebanese territory, especially in the city of Beirut and its suburbs, in light of the escalation of the Israeli attack on Lebanon and the resulting destruction of homes on the heads of their residents.”

The association explained, “This attack led to the displacement of at least a million people from southern Lebanon in search of safe places, including hundreds of Moroccan citizens who were separated after being displaced from their homes due to the escalating bombing of the areas they live in.”

In a related context, the Human Rights Association was surprised that “the Moroccan government did not take all the necessary measures, like many countries in the region, that would put an end to the suffering of these Moroccan citizens, by ensuring their return to their motherland, Morocco.”

Accordingly, the human rights body stressed “the necessity of immediate intervention by the competent Lebanese authorities and the Moroccan embassy in Beirut in order to enable them to join the homeland in safe conditions, and to save them from the dangers of war, displacement, hunger, thirst and fear.”

This comes at a time when the Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of relations with Parliament, the official spokesman for the government, Mustafa Paytas, reported that a “significant” number of members of the Moroccan community in Lebanon left this country after the escalation of the Israeli aggression.

In his speech at the press conference that followed the work of the government council held last Thursday, Paytas explained that the government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has continued to attach great importance to the conditions of Moroccans who are in areas of conflict, disaster or unrest, noting that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been overwhelmed since the emergence of the military escalation in Lebanon, to follow the situation of Moroccans there around the clock, interact with developments and situations, and take the necessary measures regarding them.

Paytas explained that a parallel crisis cell has been formed at the level of the Kingdom’s embassy in Lebanon, which works to maintain direct contact with members of the community, check on them, and guide them in a way that ensures their security and safety, under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
