Several communities in the states of Monagas, Sucre and Nueva Esparta were affected by heavy rains in recent days. The rainfall caused river overflows and flooding, reported the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
VTV reported the overflowing of the Arenas and Oro rivers in Sucre, which left 28 homes affected, in addition to the collapse of a pedestrian walkway.
Likewise, in Monagas, two classrooms at a school were flooded and some roads had to be closed due to falling trees and accumulation of debris on the road.
The mayor of the Arismendi municipality, in Nueva Esparta, Alí Romero Farías, reported through his Instagram account that there was no “regrettable” damage in this area “thanks to preventive work,” while reporting that in the Sierra community “The roads have been filled with debris.”
“After a few very rainy days (…) we have taken a tour together with the Civil Protection team and the citizen security directorate to evaluate the conditions of the river channels and the conditions of the different sectors of the municipality,” he said.
Meanwhile, officials from the National Risk Management System remain deployed to evaluate the damage and sectors affected after the rains, VTV reported.
The government of Nicolás Maduro maintains an active national plan to reduce risks in the face of the rainy season – which began in the country on 1° May and will end on November 30 -, which contemplates “all contingency protocols for any event” as well as evacuation plans and installation of shelters to deal with emergencies.
Rains and floods in Caracas
Users on social networks reported rains of varying intensity with strong thunder on October 5 in several areas of the Capital District such as Maripérez, Pinto Salinas, Propatria, El Paraíso, Bello Monte, among other sectors.
In the state of Miranda, rainfall was also recorded in different areas such as Las Mercedes, Prados del Este, Petare and La California, which caused traffic chaos due to flooding on the roads.
There were also reports of flooding on the Intercomunal de Guarenas-Guatire avenue, specifically on the street that connects with the north runway.
In the Las Palmas and Las Acacias sectors, in Caracas, citizen reports reported flooding in the streets that caused water to enter residential buildings.
Cordonazo of San Francisco
On October 4, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) recalled that the days close to San Francisco Day, rains are usually recorded in the country that are related to the so-called Cordonazo.

For October 7, Inameh reported that precipitation and electrical activity are expected in large parts of Venezuela, especially in the afternoon and evening.
Likewise, Inameh had reported in the morning hours of October 5 that rains of varying intensity would be recorded in a large part of the Venezuelan territory.
According to the report, the rainfall would be accompanied by electrical activity in the Capital District, Miranda, Bolívar, south of Anzoátegui and Guárico, Sucre, Apure, Portuguesa, south of Lara, the Andes and Zulia.
In addition, Inameh pointed out that tropical wave number 43, which was leaving the coasts of Africa, also contributed to an increase in cloudiness in the country.
The Intertropical Convergence Zone, active over the national territory, also favored the conditions for the formation of storm clouds and precipitation in the country, according to the Inameh report.
“Religious belief says that Saint Francis that day removes the cord and fills it with thunder and lightning,” Inameh said on its social media accounts.
The Catholic commemoration of the day of Saint Francis of Assisi, a monk who defends animals, is celebrated on October 4 and according to meteorological entities it coincides with the arrival of the rainy season for Panama, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil.
However, some beliefs claim that Saint Francis removes the cord from his monk’s robe and fills it with thunder and lightning and then punishes the inhabitants of the Earth who “behave badly” with cords.
