The US insists that Maduro allow all candidates to participate

The Joe Biden Administration reiterated its position regarding the disqualification of María Corina Machado and insisted that Nicolás Maduro allow all opposition candidates who wish to participate in the July 28 elections.

The US State Department expressed in a statement its “deep concern” over the decision of the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela to “prevent democratic opposition parties from registering candidates» for the next elections.

«The CNE’s acceptance of only those opposition candidates with whom Maduro and his representatives feel comfortable goes against competitive and inclusive elections.«Warned Matthew Miller, spokesman for the State Department.

The spokesperson asked that the Maduro regime allow access to international observers, end the imprisonment of opponents and members of civil society, allow the participation of all candidates who run, and release “all political prisoners.”

«We remain united with the international community in calling on Maduro to allow Venezuelans to participate in free and fair elections. As we have made clear, actions that go against the spirit and the Barbados Agreement will have consequences.«he reiterated.

Given the difficulties of the opposition bloc in nominating a candidate, the Governments of Brazil and Colombia expressed their concern about what happened. But then the PUD reported on the same Tuesday that it managed to provisionally register Edmundo González Urrutia, who can be replaced as of April 1, as long as he does not have any administrative sanction or impediment.
