(Motorsport-Total.com) – March 1, 2025 is an important date for Aston Martin’s Formula 1 project. On this date, Adrian Newey begins his work as technical director of the racing team and can from now on contribute to the development of the Formula 1 car for 2026. But that doesn’t mean that Newey will only work for Aston Martin.

Newey explains in the “High Performance” podcast namely, he will work for Red Bull beyond the specified deadline, namely on the RB17 super sports car, which he played a key role in developing. He will then “no longer do so much from within the factory” but will work from outside, says Newey.
“It will be more about communicating with people via video conferences and emails. And then I will also be involved when the first test drives with the car take place in the summer.”

Red Bull gave Newey a lot of freedom when designing the sports car. The result is a vehicle designed solely for use on a race track.
The RB17 is powered by a 4.5-liter V10 combustion engine from Cosworth, which provides around 1,000 hp. An additional electric drive contributes a further 200 hp. This results in a system output of 1,200 hp with a total weight of around 900 kilograms. And unlike Formula 1, the sports car has an active suspension, meaning it can adapt its chassis to cornering.
Red Bull will only build a total of 50 vehicles of the RB17 model, at a price equivalent to a good six million euros each.
And why RB17? This is also quickly explained: Because Red Bull only sent a modified car from the previous year to the start in Formula 1 in 2021, the team omitted the name RB17 and instead used RB16B to represent the “ancestry” of the 2022 Red Bull cars with the RB18 to continue. The RB17 closes – at least in name – the resulting gap.
