A bombardment of Israeli destroyed this Friday the area near the main border crossing between Lebanon and Syria, cutting off access from the Lebanese side to the highway connecting Beirut to Damascus, just as tens of thousands of people are fleeing into Syrian territory.
“Enemy fighter jets attacked the Masnaa area, causing the international highway to be cut off,” the Lebanese National News Agency (ANN) reported.
On the other hand, local Al Manar television, linked to the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, broadcast a video of the attacked area, where you can see large craters and considerable destruction on the road that was the target of the bombings.
Israeli bombing destroyed the only land connection to Lebanon and Syria
Syria represents the only land supply route for Lebanon, which also only has one operational airfield in the entire country: the Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut. In recent days, several missiles have fallen in the vicinity of this facility.
Masnaa is the main border crossing between Lebanon and Syria, and is the most used by the approximately 160,000 displaced Syrians and Lebanese who have sought refuge in the Arab country.
Israel and Hezbollah have been in conflict since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. However, violence escalated to unprecedented levels about ten days ago, when Israeli forces launched a massive bombing campaign that has devastated localities and entire towns.
Since the start of hostilities, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 2,000 people, most of them civilians, and forced 1.2 million people to flee their homes, mainly in the south and east of the Mediterranean country.
