KATHMANDU, Nepal.— This Sunday, the authorities of Nepal raised to 129 the number of people killed in one of the worst floods and landslides in Nepalcaused by a rain record that have hit the Himalayan country for the last three days.
The Nepal Police, leading the rescue operations, told the press that 129 people died as of Sunday, while another 62 people remain missing in different locations in the country affected by the rains.
Likewise, 86 people have been injured, indicated the Police, who estimate that the number could increase in the coming hours or days as rescue operations progress.
Disaster management forces have rescued some 3,200 people affected by floods or landslides, with hundreds of homes destroyed and populations cut off.
Experts attribute these extreme rainfall to a low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and the prolonged monsoon.
The main rivers throughout the country have been flooded and most of them have exceeded the danger level. In the capital region, comprising Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, several rivers have burst their banks, flooding roads and inundating many houses.
Videos and photos on social media platforms and local media showed people trying to move in waist-deep water. In many places, residents used buckets to empty their houses full of water.
