Last week, a pedestrian and a motorcycle driver died in traffic accidents. A particularly tragic traffic accident occurred on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in the Baden district of Lower Austria, in which the pedestrian mentioned above was killed. A 53-year-old breakdown assistant was called to an operation on the A3 and parked his vehicle on the hard shoulder with the orange rotating lights on. As he got out, a tractor-trailer veered from the first lane onto the hard shoulder and hit the stationary vehicle and the 53-year-old man standing next to it. Despite first aid measures being taken immediately, the emergency helicopter doctor could only determine that the breakdown attendant was dead. During the accident investigation, the 24-year-old Hungarian driver of the tractor-trailer stated that his vehicle veered onto the hard shoulder due to a technical defect. The motorway had to be closed in the direction of Vienna for several hours due to the clean-up work. One of the two road users who died had an accident at the weekend.
The victims died the previous week on a motorway and state road B. One traffic fatality each had to be reported in Carinthia and Lower Austria.
The presumed main causes of the accident were inattention/distraction and a technical defect in one case each. One fatal accident was a solo accident.
From January 1st to October 6th, 2024, there were 285 traffic deaths on the Austrian road network (provisional number). In the comparable period of 2023 there were 324 and 309 in 2022.
