Index – Belgium – Dávid Vitézy: From now on, everything can be the responsibility of Gergely Karácsony

Although the Metropolitan Assembly will certainly not elect a deputy mayor at its inaugural session on Friday, Dávid Vitézy evaluated the fact that the representatives will be able to discuss substantive matters as a positive development. In June, the politician was defeated by Gergely Karácsony by only a few dozen votes, and from Friday he will be the leader of the joint faction of LMP and Dávid Vitézy for Budapest (their name will be simplified soon). In his statement, he told Index that the creation of the BKK police force included in his program will also be among the proposals.

At the same time, he called it a serious political failure that the board could not elect a deputy mayor,

since Gergely Karácsony failed to hold the necessary consultations and was unable to propose a city management that enjoys the trust of the majority of the assembly. On the other hand, he is not afraid that the general assembly will be dissolved, there is not much possibility of that under the current conditions, since the board can only vote on its own dissolution with a four-fifths majority, or the Fidesz-majority Parliament can decide on it (at the end of the appropriate legal processes). Dávid Vitézy does not see any political will to this effect. The illegal operation only ends at the next meeting, if they cannot elect a deputy even then.

Today, Gergely Karácsony also sat down with the leaders of the factions, where there was agreement on the formation of committee structures. (Our paper has learned that Dávid Vitézy will be the head of the Committee for Climate Protection, Transport and Urban Development.) It was also outlined that the factions would like to take a role in the operation of the board and supervisory board systems of the capital companies – there were common points between the representative groups. It seems that instead of party cadres, they want specialists in the bodies.

Many proposals were also received to amend the SZMSZ, Dávid Vtézy did not want to predict its acceptance, but he noted that the situation is far from as hopeless as it seems, and consensus can be created in many other matters.

He also noted that if it is not possible to choose a deputy even in the long term, a situation may arise as if the government of a country consisted only of the prime minister.

From then on, he is responsible for everything. The deputy mayors are responsible for ensuring that what the assembly has decided is carried out and that new decisions are prepared. In their absence, all duties and responsibilities fall on the mayor. He cannot go on vacation, and if invited, only he can represent Budapest in all forums.

However, there is currently no person who can meet all the conditions set by the factions. So someone will have to allow the city administration to function in the longer term – emphasized Dávid Vitézy.
