FC Uzwil led 5-3 in Winterthur and had their second win of the season in sight, but conceded two goals in the final phase

The game on Sunday on the Schützenwiese between the U21 of FC Winterthur and FC Uzwil can only be described as pure spectacle. In the end, the two teams shared the points after the score was 5:5.

It’s unbelievable what happened on Sunday in the 5:5 draw between FC Winterthur’s U21s and FC Uzwil. After 18 minutes the locals led 2-0. In the course of the second half, Uzwil turned the game on its head and was ahead 5-3 until the 87th minute, before Winterthur saved a point with two late goals. Winterthur goalkeeper Damian Corbisiero scored the equalizer in the fourth minute of injury time with his head when he advanced into the Uzwil penalty area after a free kick.

The team led by coach Giuseppe “Giusi” Gambino can still only boast one win this season after ten rounds. After all, the Eastern Swiss are still just above the relegation line after this point. Next Saturday they will play the home game against Kosova, which is ranked 10th in the table.

The Uzwilers with starting problems

“We make it too easy for the opponent when it comes to goals, but we have to work hard for them ourselves,” said the Uzwil coach after the exhilarating 97 minutes. They scored lucky, but also very nice goals. And: “After the 2-0 defeat, we started playing football and showed what we were capable of.”

Uzwil actually struggled in the starting minutes and couldn’t find an effective remedy against the Winterthur team’s quick attacks. The two goals from Carmine Chiappetta and Alessandro Barletta were the logical consequence of this. Ensar Hajrovic’s goal a minute after the 0-2 lead was a kind of wake-up call. Now the guests held on and were rewarded with Ajet Sejdija’s equalizer in stoppage time in the first half.

After the restart, there was a suspicion of bad luck when Aleksandar Babic ran away from the Uzwil defense practically from the kick-off and scored to make it 3-2. What followed was one of the best that the Uzwil team had offered in the first league since promotion in the summer of 2021. Luca Lanzendorfer, Ramon Imper and Jan Ledermann turned the tide and ensured that the guests led 5-3 until shortly before the final whistle. The performance of Luca Lanzendorfer, who shone with a goal and four assists, was particularly outstanding.

Then came the fateful minutes in which Aleksandar Babic scored a dream goal and goalkeeper Damian Corbisiero’s header ensured that it wasn’t a great afternoon for the Uzwil team. Of course, most people would have been happy with a point against the sixth-place team when they arrived. After this performance, many people couldn’t hide their disappointment.
