Yahya Sinwar would be alive, he would still be making crucial decisions for Hamas, he would have hardened his positions, he would have become fatalistic after almost a year of war in Gaza, he would have no intention of reaching an agreement with Israel and indeed he would be determined to see it involved in a wider conflict in the Middle East. This is what emerges from the New York Times which cites US officials familiar with the matter. Although, the sources acknowledge, there is no certain proof of his existence in life.

According to the US newspaper, American negotiators believe that Hamas has no intention of reaching an agreement with Israel for the ceasefire and the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip since the October 7 attack a year ago in Israel, which led to the start of Israeli military operations against Hamas in the Palestinian enclave. And, the NYT writes again, US officials also believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is concerned above all about his political survival and may not believe that a ceasefire in Gaza is in his interest.

According to US officials, Hamas has shown no desire to engage in talks in recent weeks. And the sources suspect he is more resigned to the continuation of Israeli military operations. Sinwar’s belief would be that a larger war with more pressure on Israel and its soldiers could lead the military to scale back operations in Gaza. And, the NYT observes, the war in the region has spread, but not in such a way as to significantly benefit Hamas, “at least not yet”.
