BERGEN OP ZOOM – Today, on October 1, more than 50,000 people will quit smoking, including vapers. They are participating in the national Stoptober campaign and are taking on the challenge of not smoking for at least 28 days. More than 550,000 people have participated in the past ten years.

Last night a record number of people simultaneously stubbed out their last cigarette. They did this in a joint online event in which they received tips and explanations on how to get through the first 28 days smoke-free.

Due to the rise of vaping, we are now focusing even more than in previous years on the target group where vaping occurs. The figures are particularly alarming among young people. Research also shows that young people who vape are three times more likely to smoke cigarettes.
Stoptober
This year Stoptober is being organized for the eleventh year in a row: 28 days of no smoking in October. By using a positive approach and stopping together at the same time, helping and supporting each other, Stoptober has been very successful and has now become a bigger stopping moment than January 1.
Stoptober is an initiative of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), KWF, the Heart Foundation, Long Fund, the Trimbos Institute, GGD GHOR Netherlands and Health Funds for Smoke Free.
