Tightened border control between Sweden and Denmark

On Tuesday evening, Israel’s embassy in Stockholm was fired upon and on the night of Wednesday, two hand grenades were detonated at the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen. Two Swedish teenagers have been charged with terrorism following the incident in the Danish capital.

In the wake of the events, the Danish authorities are tightening border controls. The decision has been taken in consultation with the Danish security police PET.

– If anyone had any doubts about the seriousness of last week’s events at the Israeli embassy, the new accusations unfortunately emphasize with all possible clarity that the terrorist threat against Denmark is serious. Unfortunately, there are dark forces that want to hurt us, says the country’s Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard.

Random checks must be carried out at the border. It will take place on the Øresund bridge, as well as on ferries, trains and cars from Sweden.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen writes in an Instagram post on Saturday that the government is open to giving the police more resources, if necessary.

– All Danes should be able to feel safe, she writes.

Terrorism clause

Danish police announced on Saturday afternoon that they have found grounds to expand the charges against the two Swedish boys who are accused of being behind the explosions at the embassy in Copenhagen. The two are 16 and 19 years old and deny criminal guilt in the case.

– The two Swedes who are charged with the explosions in Hellerup earlier in the week are also charged this morning with violating section 114 of the Criminal Code, Copenhagen police informs X.

The two are thus charged under what is referred to as the Danish terror clause, which applies to offenses which are believed to have a terrorist motive.

The two Swedes have previously been charged with possession of five hand grenades and for having thrown two of them onto a balcony near the Israeli embassy in the Danish capital. They have already been detained for four weeks.

Investigating possible Iran connection

Danish police already said earlier this week that they were investigating a possible terrorist motive for the incident. Prosecutor Søren Harbo has also said that he believes the teenagers did not act alone, although he has not wanted to go into more detail about what he thinks.

Denmark’s intelligence service (PET) has previously said it is also investigating possible links to Iran after the explosions near the Israeli embassy, which are believed to have been caused by hand grenades.

The operational chief of the Swedish security police (Säpo), Fredrik Hällstrøm, has also said he believes both the attack in Copenhagen and a shooting incident outside the Israeli embassy in Stockholm may have links to Iran.
