The General Customs of the Republic of Cuba shared important information aimed at tourists visiting the country.
In their message, they specify that in accordance with Decree Law 22, approved in November 2020, Tourists can only import their personal effects into Cuba.
These regulations are detailed in Chapter VI, Article 11 of the aforementioned decree, which specifies that passengers classified as tourists in customs terms are allowed to bring only certain goods for personal use.
The items considered as personal effects are defined by Article 2 of the Convention on Customs Facilities for Tourism, and are the following:
- Personal jewelry
- A photographic or cinematographic camera, with a reasonable amount of film, cassettes and accessories
- A portable slide or film projector, along with accessories and a reasonable amount of slides or films
- A portable music instrument
- A portable sound reproduction device, such as tape recorders, compact disc players, and dictaphones, along with records or cassettes
- A portable radio receiver
- a mobile phone
- A portable television
- A personal computer with accessories
- A portable calculator
- A stroller (in case of passengers with children)
- Toys for minors
- A wheelchair for people with disabilities
- Personal sports equipment
Exceptions and new temporary provisions
Cuban Customs also clarified that, although these are the general regulations, the Minister of Finance and Prices has the authority to establish exceptions to these provisions.
In fact, a special regulation was recently approved that allows, temporarily and until December 31, January 2025free and unlimited importation of food, hygiene products and medicines as part of accompanied luggage.
It is important to note that, although the regulations do not explicitly indicate it, the General Customs of the Republic has specified in its Traveler Manual that these benefits apply to all passengers, regardless of their immigration category.
This means that both Cubans and tourists could take advantage of this temporary measure that facilitates the entry of essential products into the country. However, it is advisable that before the trip the contacts directly to check if there have been any changes.
