THE RECTOR of Surabaya State University (Unesa), Nurhasan, said that the 2024 National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh-North Sumatra (North Sumatra) went smoothly. Although there were several notes during the national level sporting event.

“The implementation of PON 2024 in Aceh-North Sumatra has just finished and in my opinion, the event generally ran smoothly. “This PON shows good synergy between the central government, regional government and the community in supporting the biggest national sporting event in Indonesia,” said Hasan, Nurhasan’s nickname, in a statement received on Saturday (5/10).

“Athletes have achieved many new achievements, and this shows progress in the world of Indonesian sports,” he said.

Hasan admitted that there were many criticisms and notes regarding the implementation of PON in the two provinces. One thing that must be resolved immediately is the issue of minimum standards for facilities and infrastructure.

“However, there are still several important notes regarding the implementation, especially in terms of facilities and infrastructure that need to be improved to support the comfort of athletes and spectators. “Minimum standards for main and supporting facilities and infrastructure need to be created and evaluated by PB PON,” he said.

Apart from that, Hasan also welcomed the issue of PON being held in two provinces. It is known that the North Sumatra Aceh PON is the first PON with two hosts.

“The appointment of more than one province as host for PON 2024 is an innovative and positive step. “By combining two provinces, the burden of organizing can be shared, so that each province can focus on certain sports,” he said.

Apart from strengthening cooperation between regions, the two hosts can accelerate sports development in the province. But there are challenges to the two-host model.

“The biggest challenge of this model is coordination between provinces and fair distribution of resources. If coordination is good, this model could be an effective solution for PON in the future. Several technical problems such as transportation between venues and synchronizing match schedules at both locations had arisen, although they were ultimately resolved, he said.

“Apart from that, the distance between host cities which is quite far also affects the efficiency of movement of athletes and officials,” he said.

Hasan is optimistic that the two-host model has the potential to be developed. Learning from PON Aceh North Sumatra, PON 2028 in NTB and NTT needs to be better prepared.

“Overall, this co-hosting concept has the potential to continue to be developed, provided that planning and coordination must be more mature so that future events can be smoother and provide a better experience for all parties,” he said. (Z-6)
