The Cuban TV presenter, Héctor Villar, is currently in the middle of controversy on social networks by detailing on his Instagram, paid advertising involved, how to buy a Mercedes Benz brand car in Cuba. Most of the people don’t even have enough money for a bicycle.
Sports journalist Héctor Villar has also been the subject of an avalanche of criticism after publishing a video in which he shows how to acquire a Mercedes Benz in Cuba, through brand advertising, paid to him, of course.
Villar, who combines his work on Cuban television with collaborations for international agencies, shared on his Instagram account an advertisement sponsored by the Mercedes Benz agency that has sparked controversy.
In the video, with a festive tone that contrasts with the serious crisis in the country, the presenter interviews the company’s operations manager, Alberto Ramos.
The latter details the advantages, such as the possibility of acquiring the vehicle through leasing (rental with the option to purchase), with the option of paying for it in 13 monthly installments, “as is done in other countries”, and the assistance service on the road in several provinces.
Controversy between Héctor Villar and Mercedes Benz in Cuba
Villar’s “explanation” of how to buy a Mercedes Benz in Cuba went down badly among Cubans, who have accused him of being frivolous and insensitive for promoting a business so distant from the reality faced by the majority of the population.
A reader asked if this new purchase option is available for individuals, to which Mercedes Benz responded affirmatively.
“Yes, starting this October we have new laws that allow us to sell to natural persons,” the company stated.
These “new laws” refer to recent statements by the Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, who explained how the government establishes vehicle import prices in Cuba.
