Environmental activists risk millions in compensation – spray paint on ministry door

A 34-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman are accused of having sprayed paint on the outer walls, windows and front door of the Ministry of Climate and Environment on 2 November last year.

The public prosecutor’s office has announced that they will submit a claim for compensation of over NOK 2.4 million in connection with the damage against the ministry.

The case will go before the Oslo district court after Christmas, and the court has set aside two days for the hearing.

The 34-year-old tells Nettavisen that he will dispute the size of the compensation claim.

– I am impressed that they have managed to add so many expenses that it was such a staggering sum, he says.

– We used a type of water paint that should be easy to wash away. The same paint has been used on 40-50 similar markings around the world, without anywhere near a corresponding compensation amount, claims the environmental activist from Oslo.

The 23-year-old woman is also accused of running onto the pitch during a national match at Ullevål Stadium on 12 November last year.

The defender of the accused woman, lawyer Bendik Falch-Koslung, tells Nettavisen that his client largely agrees with the actual events on which the indictment is based.

– For my client, it will be important to clarify the background to the actions, he says.
