  • During the first days of October, people expect heavy rain accompanied by thunder that they associate with the monk Saint Francis of Assisi.

Users on social networks reported, on October 5, rains of varying intensity with strong thunder in several areas of the Capital District such as Maripérez, Pinto Salinas, Propatria, El Paraíso, Bello Monte, among other areas.

Another of the states most affected by the recent rains is Sucre. In videos shared on social networks, flooding was observed in several towns in Cumaná.

Inameh report

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) had reported in the morning that rains of varying intensity would be recorded in a large part of the Venezuelan territory.

In addition, Inameh pointed out that tropical wave number 43, which is leaving the coasts of Africa, also contributes to an increase in cloudiness in the country.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone, active over the national territory, also favors the conditions for the formation of storm clouds and precipitation in the country, according to the Inameh report.

Cordonazo of San Francisco

On October 4, Inameh recalled that the days close to San Francisco Day, rains are usually recorded in the country that are related to the so-called Cordonazo.

“Religious belief says that Saint Francis that day removes the cord and fills it with thunder and lightning,” Inameh said on its social media accounts.

The Catholic commemoration of the day of Saint Francis of Assisi, a monk who defends animals, is celebrated on October 4 and according to meteorological entities it coincides with the arrival of the rainy season for Panama, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil.

However, some beliefs claim that Saint Francis removes the cord from his monk’s robe and fills it with thunder and lightning and then punishes the inhabitants of the Earth who “behave badly” with cords.

Another theory states that the saint wants to play with the clouds and so that they do not get him wet, he hits them with the cord to remove all the water.

It is also said that Saint Francis is the saint who manages the water that falls on the planet and that every October 4 he removes his cord and shakes his cassock until the last drop of water falls on him, and then, that year It won’t rain anymore.

According to a publication by Venezuelan meteorologist Luis Vargas on his website, San Francisco Day coincides with the beginning of the rainy season in the country, although he specified that, unlike other years, there are no tropical waves passing through the country. country.

These are some of the climatic phenomena that Vargas indicated could affect the national territory in the coming days:

-A prolonged trough to the Central Caribbean with influence on western Venezuela.

-An extended trough caused by Hurricane Kirk, which although it will pass away from the Caribbean, will indirectly affect the country from the beginning of next week.
