You must stop it immediately.. Health warns mothers of a common habit that causes dehydration in children

Dr. Abla Alfi, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, said that there is misinformation regarding the continuation of breastfeeding children in the second year of their lives, noting that this stage is very important for the child’s health and mental development during the coming years.

Urgent warning to all mothers

Al-Alfi explained that there is a rumor that “breastfeeding in the second year leads to mental retardation,” stressing that this is not true, as breast milk contains fatty acids and growth factors necessary for developing the brain and enhancing its capabilities. She confirmed that a child’s brain growth reaches 85% during the first two years, and these natural materials are not available in any other food.

The Deputy Minister of Health also pointed out that there is other incorrect information related to the necessity of breastfeeding a child while sitting, and that breastfeeding while sleeping may lead to a middle ear infection.

She explained that this matter relates to artificial feeding using a bottle, and not to breastfeeding, as there is no opportunity for excess milk to accumulate in the child’s mouth.

Important tips for all mothers

Al-Alfi called on mothers to avoid using bottles and pacifiers, noting that if the child screams, he may be hungry or need to feel safe or need a diaper change.

She stressed that artificial nipples may expose the child to health problems such as gastroenteritis and dehydration due to their contamination, and may also lead to the child rejecting his mother’s breast.

She pointed out that mothers can express their breasts and store the milk in a clean cup in the refrigerator to serve it to the child with a spoon or cup while they are away from him, stressing that most mothers are able to breastfeed their children themselves.

She explained that after the sixth month, the child needs complementary meals, while continuing to breastfeed for up to two years.

Benefits of breastfeeding for the baby

  • The components of breast milk contain elements necessary for the development of the baby.
  • Breast milk gives the baby immune bodies that protect him from diseases.
  • Breastfeeding promotes emotional and mental completeness, making infants more intelligent.
  • Breast milk is always available, sterile and easy to digest.
  • Breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

As for cocos milk, it has many important benefits for infants, which are:

  • It contains a high percentage of protein and immune antibodies that enhance the child’s immunity.
  • Rich in vitamin A.
  • It has a laxative effect that helps expel stool quickly.
  • It is yellow in colour, light and sticky.

Cock’s milk is formed in the last months of pregnancy, and begins to come out with the baby’s first breastfeeding and continues until four days after birth. Despite its small quantity, it is sufficient for the newborn’s needs, and there is no need to give him any other fluids, as breast milk contains a sufficient amount of water.
