On Tuesday 8 October the curtain rises on the first show of the new season of the Giuditta Pasta Theatre, the beautiful hall in Saronno, an opportunity for many spectators from Como who, with a small trip, have a wide choice of shows including theatre, music and dance. For the opening here are two high-sounding names in contemporary Italian prose: Arianna Scommegna and Gabriele Vacis with “La Molli” a very successful theatrical monologue
Molli’s are whispered confidences, whispered confessions. The starting point from which Vacis, director, and Scommegna, actress, take their starting point is Molly Bloom’s monologue which concludes Joyce’s Ulysses. The character of Molli is immersed in everyday life with Milanese sounds, translating the text into a plot of cultural references, stories and songs that have the flavor of our time. Arianna Scommegna is alone on the stage, sitting in the center of the scene; his intense, unstoppable monologue, without punctuation, breathless, is squeezed between a chair, a glass placed on the ground and a handful of handkerchiefs to absorb all the liquids, sacred and profane, of a life of solitude and dissatisfaction, like a score unfinished. The river of words is the same stream of consciousness of Joyce’s character who fills a sleepless night with thoughts and lies, while she waits for her husband, Leopold, to return home, just as Molli waits for Poldi. The actress, poised between the novel and life, retraces her existence of little love, endless expectations, missed opportunities, from the first kiss to a rosary of lovers to be told to silence the emptiness, from the pain of a lost son until a final ‘yes’ pronounced in favor of life, of love by a woman never given up on resignation. The painful notes are always tempered by irony and a levity that saves everything; the text always plays, constantly, with the double register denounced right from the subtitle, Entertainment behind Joyce’s back. Fragments of life told in a light-hearted, sometimes desperate way, stories of flesh and blood, life that flows like tears, that chokes in a cry or dissolves in laughter.
