Increasing digitalization, demographic change and the desire, especially among young employees, to work more flexibly pose major challenges to the world of work. “It’s about breaking down old structures and developing new leadership methods,” says Tamara Mayrhofer. Managing change is essential for managers.
39-year-old Tamara Mayrhofer acquired many of the methods and skills that managers need by completing the part-time MBA program at the IBSA (International Business School Austria), for which the OÖN and the IBSA award two scholarships (details in the info box). “Whether it’s management work, finance or strategy development, a lot of important knowledge is imparted in the course,” says the Puchenau resident, who can put this knowledge to good use. She studied health management in Krems and has been working in the medical technology industry for 16 years. She has been working for the Medtronic group, which has its Austrian headquarters in Vienna, for nine years. There she is responsible for sales and market development for Austria, Switzerland and a large part of Germany.
“There are very good in-house training programs. But what I was missing was the exchange with employees from other industries.” This is also why she decided to take the course, which is held online once a week. There is also a face-to-face unit once a month in Linz (or optionally Graz or Vienna) with US lecturers. “I invested up to 15 hours a week in my studies. It was a challenge, but it was great fun.” At Medtronic, Mayrhofer climbed a step up the career ladder.
Friendships emerged
She particularly benefited from the exchange with colleagues from other industries on a wide variety of topics: “New friendships have emerged. This networking is also the key to thinking and acting in an interdisciplinary manner.”
One of the highlights was graduating from CLU in California. She presented her thesis there: “It was nice to get to know the American mentality.”
