In the future, the new transport hub will provide an opportunity to comfortably enter the city from the Vilnius side and leave in the direction of Klaipėda. On the other side of the Icelandic highway, the preparation of the construction area is already being completed in an area of almost 2 hectares.
The final part of the transport unit
“We will finish the work we started in this place. After building a new connection towards Klaipėda, traffic flow will decrease at the junction of Savanorių avenue and the A1 main road, at the so-called Murava intersection. This is especially true during peak times. Until then, we have improved the connection with the roundabout on Ashigalis Street and the future viaduct – we have completed the work on S. Žukauska Street, Kalniečiai, which stretches for about one and a half kilometers. After capitalizing this section and building the future viaduct, we will have another convenient connection with the city bypass.
Last year’s promise to start the construction of three new bridges and one overpass within four years is proceeding according to plan. Two bridges are already under construction across the Nemunas. The action will soon begin across Neris – between Senamiestis and Brasta Streets,” says Kaunas Deputy Mayor Andrius Palionis.
The city municipality will carry out construction works on state land. A little earlier, a cooperation agreement was concluded with the then Lithuanian Motor Road Directorate (now “Via Lietuva”). Kaunas council also approved the decision to design and build the so-called Ashigalis viaduct.
Will improve communication
An intersection of different levels with deceleration and acceleration lanes is designed at Ashigalis street. After the implementation of the project, it will be easier for drivers to reach the Bridžiai taka quarter, a part of the Eiguliai micro-district on the other side of the Iceland highway.
Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access the Kleboniškis forest quickly and safely, using a completely new pedestrian-bicycle path.
Currently, the A1 highway in the direction of Klaipėda can be reached from the city center with eight connections. Half of them are near Šilainiai, Mega shopping center and Nerimi. Dainava micro-district and Palemons each have two communication hubs.
The new viaduct will be built by the company “Autokausta”, which submitted the best price-quality ratio among the five participants in the public tender. The contractors undertook to perform the works for 7.65 million. euros. Construction is planned for exactly 12 months.
Action on a construction site
The first works on the approaches of the future viaduct began in 2017-2018. After forming a roundabout and connecting Ashigalis street with the main road in two directions, an additional entrance and exit from the city appeared. The opened connection with the A1 highway facilitated the communication of Kaunas residents with Kalniečiai and Eigulių micro-districts and provided a new exit in the direction of Vilnius.
During the implementation of the first stage of the project, more work was done – road embankments were formed and underground communications were built.
As the construction of the viaduct is approaching, the preparation of an area of approximately 2 ha on the Kleboniškis side for the planned exits with a roundabout is almost finished.
