The National Coordination of the local offices of the National Syndicate for Higher Education of the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry has warned of the consequences of the collapse of the public medicine system, in reference to the continued boycott of studies by students, and the attempt to “steal” academic powers that should remain the core responsibility of professors.
This warning comes after an emergency meeting of professors of the faculties of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry, on Friday, October 4, which ended with the issuance of a strongly worded statement denouncing the campaign of insult, slander, and defamation to which academic professors are exposed in their various positions.
The same statement considered that such actions “are not in line with the basic principles of Moroccan society’s ethics and human rights principles, and they also violate personal freedom and freedom of expression, which everyone seeks to protect and promote.”
Regarding the points of contention between the Ministry of Higher Education and medical students, the professors’ statement confirmed that “reducing the number of years of study in the faculties of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry will not affect the quality of training, and that it has been included in the various elected structures and has been discussed,” noting that “reducing the number of The formative years do not justify the long period of boycott and loss of the school year.”
The professors themselves stressed that “pedagogical affairs, whether related to the duration and method of training, evaluation, or ensuring quality, are a matter reserved for university professors in the faculties of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry, and no party is allowed to bid on them.”
Accordingly, the professors called on everyone, both the ministry and the students, to respect their specialization, while they invited the students to “review their position, and try to rectify what remains of their training path, in order to save public medicine.”
The professors’ statement concluded by emphasizing that this series, “whether intentional or spontaneous, will contribute directly and indirectly to the destruction of public medical college institutions,” while calling for an end to this crisis “immediately and once and for all” in order to “preserve public service.”
The emergency meeting of professors of the faculties of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry comes within the framework of following up on developments in the current situation regarding the medical studies reform file and the developments that have occurred in it, and as a result of the campaign of insult and slander to which the professors were subjected by “irresponsible” parties.
