The company Green Vault Energy will take up that challenge by building what is basically a gigantic power bank at Hirtshals Harbour. The green energy station, as Green Vault Energy calls it, will be able to deliver an output of 20 MW with an associated battery storage of 90 MWh.
The company writes this in a press release sent out together with the Port of Hirtshals.
Action behind the words
The energy station is so large that, according to Green Vault Energy, it will be able to supply around 7000 households with electricity for 24 hours or supply 3500 households with electricity permanently. In the latter case, the calculations say that the battery will never be completely discharged during periods of lack of sun and wind, before it goes the other way, so that the battery is charged again when there is again a surplus of green electricity.
– In Hjørring Municipality, we have a clear strategy to support the green transition by ensuring that green energy is available for both businesses and private households. There, Hirtshals Havn plays a central role by bringing different players together and creating synergy through close collaborations between companies. I see the establishment of the Green Energy Vault at the harbor as further proof that action is being put behind words, says Hjørring’s mayor Søren Smalbro, who is also deputy chairman of Hirtshals Harvn’s board of directors.
One of the country’s largest
With an output of 20 MW and a battery storage of 90 MWh, the station in Hirtshals will be one of the largest in the country. The energy group EWII is currently building a battery storage facility on Bornholm that will have an output of 30 MW and an associated battery storage of 43 MWh. The battery on Bornholm is scheduled to be commissioned this year.
The investment in the battery warehouse in Hirtshals will amount to half a billion kroner, divided into an investment in the construction itself of kroner 275 million and then a further kroner 225 million in operation over the next 20 years.
There are already plans to build a Power2X facility at the port in Hirtshals, which will produce green hydrogen from the wind turbines in the area, just as the port will be an important player for shipping CO2 for underground storage in the North Sea.
Contributes to creating balance
Apart from the impractical level of functioning as a – very – large power bank, a solution with a large battery such as the one Green Energy Vault will build at the port in Hirtshals can also contribute to balancing the electricity grid. There must be a balance between the power that is sent into the grid and the power that is drawn from the grid.
Otherwise, it goes wrong.
The green energy station will be built in 2025 and 2026, and it will be ready at the beginning of 2026, the company writes in the press release. It will occupy an area of almost 1,000 square meters at the port.
