Sevilla does not lift: it loses 2-1

Amid protests by upset fans against the increasing scheduling of matches on Mondays and Fridays, Alavés defeated Sevilla 2-1 at home yesterday, at the start of round six of the Spanish league.

A group of local fans left the stands during the first minutes to express their rejection of duels that do not take place on Saturday or Sunday, which in their opinion makes it difficult for the public to attend.

Before the duel, fans were asked not to occupy their seats until a few minutes after kickoff. Through the television broadcast, the empty stands could be seen, as well as some posters protesting against the schedules.

“Fans, it’s now or never. No to football during the week,” said a message displayed on three large banners behind one of the goals of the Mendizorroza stadium in the city of Vitoria.

Alavés will play two of their first 10 games of the campaign on Friday night. Last season, they played 12 of their 34 league games on a Friday or Monday.

The fans sat down in time to see the goal of Alavés’ sale at 17 minutes. It was from Carlos Vicente.

Carlos Martín doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 60th minute. Despite Dodi Lukebakio’s discount seven minutes from time, Sevilla never had a real chance of avoiding another defeat (they have three in six games played).

Alavés reached 10 points in fifth place in the general table. Sevilla, meanwhile, is in 14th place, with five points.

Seek to wake up

Today, Real Madrid will host Espanyol from Barcelona, a team that has played three games without losing.

If they do not lose, the meringues would equal the second best streak in the history of La Liga of a team without defeat, the 38 games of Real Sociedad in 1979, and will complete “an entire League” without losing. The last one was on the same day (six) last season at the Metropolitano, against Atlético de Madrid (3-1).

The white team has just won 3-1 in the middle of the week against Stuttgart, in its debut in the Champions League.

In another match, Valladolid will host Real Sociedad today.

Both teams will seek to get out of the bottom of the table and, especially in the case of Real, prevent their rivals at the top from slipping away.

Osasuna will face Las Palmas at home, a team in the relegation zone. Finally, the last place, Valencia, will host Girona.— EFE
