“Today, New Democracy turns half a century old. Half a century of continuous service with “the sole criterion being the interest of the Nation and the Greek people”.
It was, after all, the faction that was identified like no other with historical intersections and major national elections. The faction that made Greece a beacon of liberal democracy and at the same time a driving force of developments in the Balkan peninsula. But above all, the faction that “earned” its own medal of patriotism in difficult times for the country and was associated with Hellenism throughout the length and breadth of the earth.
Because, as a member of the Greek ethnic minority, I cannot forget how it was the New Democracy and the Government of Constantinos Mitsotakis with Minister Antonis Samaras that opened the arms of Greece for us. Which allowed us to be able to smile again and taste the fruits of a real Democracy, leaving behind the oppression and torture of the communist regime.
It was the New Republic of Kostas Karamanlis that took the initiative and pushed for the creation of the first Greek school that operated in Albania, Homer, not allowing our language and national spirit to fade. However, it was the same Government that granted the much-desired Greek citizenship to the Greeks of Albania and filled the sails of national dignity with a furious wind.
And, finally, it was the Prime Minister of the current Government of the New Republic, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the one who made the first historical visit to Heimarra and the one who straightened his stature in the face of the authoritarianism and coup plotting of Albania in our region.
In the Albanian cell I stayed in for 16 months, I never felt alone and that gave me strength. All my compatriots now feel the same way. Now, they know that they have the watchful eye and patronage of the national Center on them.
Today, our faction continues to fight for what is firmly engraved on its ideological compass. For economic prosperity, the European perspective and national pride.
