Intensive are the controls being carried out in livestock units of the Municipality of Emmanuel Papa Serres, after the detection of a case of sheep pox in a unit in the area.
The controls began after the meeting convened by the Serron Deputy Governor Panagiotis Spyropoulos with executives and breeders of the General Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the P.K.M. and the Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of P.E. Serres.
Intensive checks were initially started in 12 livestock units located within a radius of three kilometers from the unit where the case was detected and continue in 210 units located within a radius of ten kilometers from it. So far the image of the animals is excellent while the authorities are optimistic that the chances of transmission to other herds are minimized by the fact that the case was detected in a closed unit.
The 340 sheep of this particular unit will be taken to slaughter and burial as well as their food until Friday.
The meeting was attended by Serron Deputy Governor Panagiotis Spyropoulos, the General Director of the General Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the P.K.M. Mrs. Tertivanidis, the Head of the Directorate of Veterinary Medicine of P.K.M. Mina Bori, the Head of the Department of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of P.E. Serres Leonidas Varoudis and the Deputy Head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine P.E. Serres Anastasia Valtopoulou.
During the meeting, the data to date were evaluated, analyzed and guidelines were given for the actions of the veterinary authorities in the coming days.
The protection and surveillance zones and all the official controls that must be carried out by the competent authorities in these zones were also presented. It was pointed out, as an immediate priority, the recording and inventory of all units located within these zones, the clinical examination of all animals and the carrying out of sampling, where this is deemed necessary by veterinarians. In addition, the control and recommendation for the observance of increased biosecurity measures during the entry and exit, of people and vehicles, from the units located within the surveillance and protection zones.
It is noted that there is no cause for concern for the consumer public, given that the disease is not transmitted to humans.
In Serres Province, a Local Control Center has already been set up, as provided by the legislation, for the treatment of the disease and the competent authorities are in continuous cooperation with the National Center for the treatment of the disease.
In this context, all the units of the protection and surveillance zones and the further prohibited zones will be informed, so that there is immediate prevention.
