Government representative Pavlos Marinakis was asked by Newsbeast about minors and whether the limit will be lowered from 15 to 14 and how the balance between prevention and repression can be found.
“It was one of the proposals made by the relevant ministers but it was rejected by the prime minister and it was the only one that was rejected. It was decided by the Prime Minister that nothing would be gained by lowering the age limit by one year. It is not a matter of suppression at such young ages. Certainly the tightening has great value in many other provisions and we must stand by the government’s initiatives with measures that have a preventive nature and aim to shield potential victims such as the platform for bowling”, said Pavlos Marinakis.
He continued: “Over 400 incidents have been reported and dealt with. But violence does not stay in schools. We have a proliferation of arrests. We have a complaint line and we catch as many incidents as we can. As a new parent I have to say it is the parents responsibility. In this country we are used to ascribing everything to the state. Some incidents you can’t believe are done by small children. The parents of these children need to look in the mirror and understand what is really happening. We are all by their side and the patrol cars intervene in a few minutes. Teachers and professors should not be afraid. We are talking about children. It is a deeply social issue, not one of repression.
The delinquency of minors has many ramifications and repression and imprisonment are not the main ones.”
