In Rome – a creative dialogue between the artists E.Škarnulytė and A.Kasuba | Culture

The origins of the creative vision of the film were connected with E.Škarnulytė’s personal acquaintance with the Lithuanian architect and sculptor Aleksandra Kasuba (Aleksandra Fledžinskaitė-Kašubienė). Kasuba’s work, in which the connections between nature and space are often observed, has become one of the most important sources of inspiration in the director’s work. The architecture and creativity of Kasuba seen in the film is like an introduction to the artists’ further dialogue, their innovative solutions for the perception of space.

in 2018 E. Škarnulytė first visited the Rock Hill House and Shell Dwellings buildings designed by A. Kasuba, which are located in the New Mexico desert. Architectural objects that express Kasuba’s philosophy about natural space and the human relationship with it have become elements of the director’s creative research. In the same year, she developed a personal connection with Kasuba, meeting her in Albuquerque, USA. This was the beginning of a mutual creative collaboration that grew out of a shared interest in both the worlds of art and science.

A.Kasuba’s work, which is strongly related to the natural world, became an inspiration for E.Škarnulytė’s visual architectural expression and broader ideas about space, materials and human presence in the natural environment. Based on this inspiration, E.Škarnulytė continues to explore the intersections of art and science in her work, especially being interested in the achievements of astronomy, quantum physics and natural sciences. This communion between female artists of different generations became an important creative impulse for the director’s works.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania in Italy Dalia Kreivienė and cultural attaché Laura Gabrielaitytė-Kazulėnienė, congratulating E.Škarnulytė on the presentation of the film MAXXI, were happy about the meeting of these two artists of different generations, in which, despite the different era, both creators speak the same artistic language.

The “Ambienti” exhibition, which also includes A. Kasuba’s art installation, can be seen at the MAXXI Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture until November 3.

The project was implemented in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Italy and the Institute of Lithuanian Culture. Video gallery is provided In Between Art Film Foundation.
