Asunción, IP Agency.- The first cornea transplant carried out in the department of Alto Paraná benefited an 18-year-old young man from Esteño and a 67-year-old citizen from Campo 9, through an inter-institutional alliance.
The corneal transplant performed at the Area 2 Hospital of Ciudad del Este benefited an 18-year-old young man from Ciudad del Este, and a 67-year-old man from Campo 9, department of Caaguazú. The latter underwent surgery for a diagnosis of cataracts, in addition to intraocular lens implantation and cornea transplant.
The donor was a young man, who after a traffic accident was declared brain dead, which activated the protocol of the National Institute of Ablation and Transplantation (INAT), dependent on the Ministry of Health.
The first cornea transplant was carried out through the inter-institutional agreement between the Ministry of Health, INAT, the Tesãi Foundation and the Visión Foundation, with the support of Itaipu Binacional.
Dr. Edgar Duarte, head of the Department and Previous Segment of the Vision Foundation, highlighted the importance of continuing with these procedures to benefit patients in the region.
“The idea is that these transplants are done regularly and that the tissue collections carried out in the department of Alto Paraná are for patients from this region, so that the benefit is for them,” he said.
Merger of surgical teams
The surgical team of the Vision Foundation, with headquarters in Asunción, was made up of ophthalmological specialists, surgeons and retinologists.
The team was headed by Dr. Edgar Duarte, head of the Department and Anterior Segment; Engineer Olivia Gómez, director of the Vision program; Dr. Liz Martínez; Dr. Javier González, director of the Banco de Córneas-Paraguay; Dr. Gerardo González, surgeon, in addition to the support of the local staff of the Fundación Visión in Ciudad del Este.
Doctors Richard Ayres, head of the operating room and general surgeon, and Dr. Carlos González, ophthalmologist at the Area 2 Hospital, participated in the surgical intervention by the Tesãi Foundation, as well as instrument technicians, nursing and support staff.
This advance was possible thanks to the collaboration between surgeons from Asunción and Ciudad del Este, who joined forces to provide access to highly complex procedures in ophthalmology, reported the Ministry of Health.
