Relatives of detainees in Venezuela ask the TSJ to review the precautionary measures

Caracas, Oct 3 (EFE).- Relatives and friends of those detained in the context of post-election protests in Venezuela requested this Thursday the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), through an appeal for protection, the review of the precautionary measures of the prisoners, who are accused of various crimes such as terrorism and incitement to hatred.

The relatives, accompanied by former opposition presidential candidate Enrique Márquez, also asked the TSJ to respect due process for the detainees.

Gabriela Meneses, a relative of the detained Dennis Rojas González, 21, told EFE that the young man was captured in the state of La Guaira on August 3, after protesting on July 29, when massive demonstrations were recorded in several regions against the result. official of the presidential elections, which gave re-election to Nicolás Maduro, a victory that the largest opposition bloc considers “fraudulent.”

Meneses said that Rojas, accused of “terrorism,” is having his human rights “violated” and is not allowed a private defense.

«They are charging him with terrorism. That’s such a big word. Terrorism is when you destroy an entire country, knock down a plane,” said the woman, while stating that the young man “did not break” or “burn” anything during the protests, as stated by the Prosecutor’s Office, which accuses the protesters of damaging and burn headquarters of public institutions.

Likewise, he said that the detainee has “a fractured hand” and has not been treated, and that he also suffers from “severe dermatitis on his face.”

For her part, Moraima Urbáez, mother of Kevin Ramos, told EFE that her son, 33, was also detained on July 29, “apparently” for no reason, during a police operation in La Guaira.

“He refused to let the police put him on the motorcycle, they still beat him and took him away,” said the woman.

He added that the detainee “has an inguinal hernia and hydrocele (fluid in the testicles)” and said he did not know if he has been evaluated by a doctor.

Urbáez explained that the charges against his son are those that “have the majority”: incitement to hatred, damage and harm, among others.

After the post-election protests, the authorities registered more than 2,400 detainees, whom the Prosecutor’s Office accuses of generating “violence” and “vandalism”, while the largest opposition coalition accuses State security agents of “repression” in the demonstrations.

The NGO Foro Penal counts in Venezuela 1,905 detainees considered “political prisoners”, 1,767 of them arrested after the presidential elections.
