“It’s me who sets the line”: Michel Barnier heard on Thursday establishing his authority, by assuming tax increases for some “300 companies” as well as “the most fortunate people”, despite friction with the Macronist camp , and by qualifying the hard line advocated by his Minister of the Interior on immigration.
“We are going to ask for an effort from the largest companies which make more than a billion” euros in turnover, “this represents 300 companies”, developed the Prime Minister on France 2. “But there will not be no new taxes on almost all of the 4 million companies”, he added, refuting any “fiscal shock”. How much can these measures bring in to the State?
A third of the effort needed to reduce the deficit
If Michel Barnier wanted to reassure on Thursday by promising that there will be no fiscal shock, these tax increases must still make it possible to ensure a third of the effort necessary to reduce the deficit. In detail, the exceptional contribution which will be requested from the wealthiest French people should bring two billion euros to the State, to which will be added the results of an increase in taxation on the largest companies, “which will last a year or two”, specifies Michel Barnier.
At this stage, the government does not confirm the expected amounts of such participation. But one thing is certain: with this measure, the State will garner the most revenue, estimates Eric Pichet, professor at Kedge Business School. “There are very few taxpayers who earn more than 500,000 euros per year, we are in the symbolic domain. So it will remain significantly lower than what an increase in corporate tax or a tax on redemptions could bring in of actions”.
If only 300 companies will be targeted by this surcharge, the others, nearly four million in France, will also be involved in other aspects such as the aid they receive for allowances.
