Now René Nielsen and the rest of us live in the real world, and it might not be that bad either.
Fortunately, the violins are missing, and René Nielsen’s serious illness means that the mask is and will be a constant companion in his life. But he has taken control of his life, and thus he has actually succeeded in creating a real change, not just for himself, but also for others who live with a stigmatizing appearance.
What started the positive change seems like a small thing. Nothing could be more wrong.
When René Nielsen took a step into the light and shared the difficult situations that the meeting with the outside world often puts him in, he put himself in a vulnerable situation. He reached out, and it’s not easy, said in Northern Jutland, because he couldn’t know if anyone would accept his outstretched arm.
It was there, among other things here at the editorial office, where we spread awareness of René Nielsen and his blue mask, so that he does not have to experience being pointed at or even reported to the police.
It turned out that the citizens of the area in western Vendsyssel were ready to call René Nielsen, among other things by spreading the knowledge of his special situation.
It has made a big difference for René, he says, and it doesn’t stop there: His story has also reached others who are in the same or similar situation as him. His courage to come forward – and how his surroundings have reacted to it – has inspired others, and a new community across parts of the country has emerged.
It is very inspiring, because it is not only visible masks that can be difficult to carry around.
Showing who you are behind the mask you put on yourself in some contexts requires courage, but is also a huge opportunity to be seen for who you are.
