It is necessary to redouble efforts against a scourge in Mexico

Suicide is not due to one problem, but rather the sum of several problems that, when not attended to or do not have the emotional intelligence to overcome them, lead to suicidal ideation. For this reason, suicide care is so complex and it is necessary to work much more to reduce the rates of the phenomenon reported in the State.

In an effort to collaborate with this task, the V Regional Suicide Prevention Conference will be held at the Peninsular Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (Cephcis) of the UNAM on Thursday, September 5, starting at 10 a.m.

Dr. Laura Hernández Ruiz, researcher at UNAM’s Cephcis, is the organizer of this activity, as part of the connection to a series of research that she has been carrying out for several years in the entity and that has led to several texts such as the “Geographic Atlas and statistician for the analysis of suicide in the Yucatan Peninsula.”

Panel tables

At the Regional Conference, two panel tables will be held: “Intervention and care work for suicide prevention in young people in Yucatán” and “Intervention and care work for suicide prevention in young adults in Yucatán.”

In the first, Dr. Arsenio Rosado Franco, director of the Mental Health Institute of the State of Yucatán, will participate as speakers, with the topic “Is it possible to prevent death by suicide?”; the psychologist Zendy Prado Garibay, head of the Psychology Department of the City Council of Mérida and responsible for the Municipal Mental Health Center, with “Mental health self-care strategies for suicide prevention”, and the psychologist Carlos Gorocica Barrera, director of Development Integral to the Secretariat of Social Development of the State of Yucatán, with the theme “Guardians of life: a program for the prevention of suicide in youth.”

Ricardo López Santillán will serve as moderator.

Dr. Hernández Ruiz will take part in the second table, who will present the topic “Between life and death due to suicide in adolescents in the state of Yucatán”; teacher Aarón Israel Pacheco Miranda, from the Center for Psychological Studies, Clinics and Research (Cecip), with the talk “Analysis of risk factors and containment in the construction of a suicide risk instrument”, and teacher Marcos Augusto García Yeh, from Cephcis, who will talk about the digital application of instruments to help in suicide prevention. This panel will be moderated by Dr. Enrique J. Rodríguez Balam.

Suicidal ideation

Dr. Laura Hernández shared some data and ideas that will be developed at the event, for example the risk factors associated with suicidal ideation, according to field work carried out in a municipality in Yucatán, in which she evaluated and surveyed 252 high school students.

For example, among the individual risk factors, anxiety, lack of emotional intelligence tools, and alcohol and drug abuse stood out; social factors were poverty, violence, and limited social support, and interpersonal factors included poor family functioning and breakup with a romantic partner.

The specialist emphasizes that Yucatán continues to occupy the first places in suicide cases. In 2010, the State was in first place with a suicide rate of 10.5%; in 2015, in fifth place with a rate of 8.7%, and in 2020, in third place, with a rate of 10.2%.

It highlights that although the authorities are working on the issue of suicide prevention, both at the national and state level, there are not enough personnel to carry this message to the population, which is why carrying out activities like this one and offering courses and workshops Bringing both students and teachers to schools is significant in fighting this scourge.— IRIS MARGARITA CEBALLOS ALVARADO
