Statistics Norway: The health institutions spent 5.4 billion on research last year

It shows figures from the report « Resource use for research in health institutions in 2023 » from Statistics Norway (SSB).

Resource use for research and development work (R&D) includes research at healthcare organizations and private, non-profit hospitals – the specialist healthcare service. 49 out of 46 healthcare organizations reported on research activity in 2023.

In total, the health institutions reported operating costs for research of close to NOK 5.4 billion last year. It includes salary, pension, employer’s contribution, cost of goods, other direct and indirect operating costs, depreciation and other. Senior doctors, doctors and psychologists in clinical positions, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, fellows and other hospital staff performed 3,510 research man-years.

On average, a research year’s work cost about NOK 1.5 million.

The use of resources for research accounted for 2.8 per cent of the total resources available to the health institutions. It is on a par with the previous measurement, which applied to the year 2021.

Health south-east is clearly the largest health region in the research area, with around two thirds of the resources, ahead of Health west, which used a fifth of the funds. Helse nord and Helse Midt-Norge accounted for 6 and 7 per cent respectively.
