THREE people were killed and 15 others were reportedly injured in a knife attack at a suburban supermarket in Shanghai, Monday (30/9) local time, ahead of the week-long National Day holiday in China.
The incident is the latest in a series of stabbing incidents in major Chinese cities this year.
The attacker, a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, has been detained, local police in Songjiang District said in a statement, Tuesday (1/10).
According to a preliminary investigation by police, Lin traveled to Shanghai to vent his anger after experiencing a personal financial dispute. The knife attack occurred one day before China’s National Day “Golden Week,” when holiday travel is expected to increase.
Public stabbing incidents have been on the rise for years in China, with authorities often blaming mental illness. Children at school are a common target.
In September, a 10-year-old Japanese student was stabbed to death by an assailant meters from his school in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.
The incident, along with a knife attack in June against two Japanese nationals in Suzhou, a large city in eastern China, has sparked security concerns among members of the Japanese community in China.
Stabbing incidents are rare in Shanghai but not unprecedented.
In 2022, a man went on a stabbing spree at a major hospital in China’s financial hub, injuring 15 people. The man was sentenced to death a year later. (CNA/B-3)
