We review what you need to know about the new version of Nosferatu by Robert Eggers before its premiere.
Lovers of horror, and especially vampire stories, know that there is an unavoidable classic when it comes to the most terrifying creature. With more than a hundred years behind him, Nosferatu (Nosferatu, a symphony of horror1922) by FW Murnau could not escape the making of a new, more ‘modernized’ version, in this case, by one of the most interesting directors of the moment, as far as the genre is concerned.
Robert Eggers, head of The Witch (The Witch: A New-England Folktale2015), The Lighthouse (2019) y The North Man (The Northman2022), he has been planning this remake for a while and even imagined a version starring his ‘muse’, our beloved Anya Taylor-Joy, and Harry Styles; although both had to decline the offer due to scheduling problems. As with many filmmakers and their projects, the pandemic complicated Eggers’ plans, delaying filming and forcing him to choose a new cast.
IS THE NEW SALEM’S LOT WORTH IT?

Following the departure of Anya and Harry, the film went on hiatus while the studio settled its affairs and budgets. In between, Eggers moved forward with his next film, until he had the green light to dedicate himself to this reimagining of Murnau’s classic. Finally, Bill Skarsgård (as Count Orlok) and Lily-Rose Depp became the chosen ones to lead this “Gothic tale of obsession, between a bewitched young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient vampire who stalks her, bringing with him an indescribable horror.”.
Skarsgård, an expert in terrifying characters thanks to It, Castle Rock y Barbarian (Barbarian2022), adds a new creature to his resume, accompanied by other big names such as Willem Dafoe – a recurring actor for Eggers and star of The Shadow of the Vampire (Shadow of the Vampire2000), where he plays Max Schreck, the Nosferatu from the original tape–, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney.
The film, written and directed by Eggers, will hit theaters in the United States on December 25, 2024, eager to sneak into the awards season: “Robert Eggers’ bold filmmaking is always a treat for fans, and we can promise that his Nosferatu is planning one hell of a Christmas party.”said Peter Kujawski, president of Focus Features, the independent production company that will be in charge of distributing the film.

Plagiarism or “homage”?
Far away and long ago, director FW Murnau wanted to adapt Bram Stoker’s classic novel, but since the studio did not obtain the rights, he decided to film his own version which, despite several changes, still has a few similarities with the story of the Count Dracula. Stoker’s widow sued them for copyright infringement and, after winning the case, all copies of the book were ordered destroyed. Nosferatu (1922).
Luckily, many of them survived and, today, the story of this deformed creature loaded with symbolism, which sows death and terror in its wake, is one of the best examples of the vampire myth and the greatest exponent of German expressionism… quite far from the romantic vision of the original novel.

The other remake
Eggers’ is not the first Nosferatu remake, and we assume it won’t be the last. In 1979, Werner Herzog left with Nosferatu, the Vampire (Nosferatu: Phantom of the Night1979), starring Klaus Kinski, her favorite actor.
Isabelle Adjani (Lucy Harker) and Bruno Ganz (Jonathan Harker) complete the cast of this story where Count Dracula moves from Transylvania to Wismar, spreading death – in the form of the Black Plague – and terror in his wake. Herzog omits several characters and changes parts of the plot, although he retains much of the original symbolism of Murnau, one of his undisputed idols.
