An informed source told Reuters that Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, has discussed US-Saudi diplomatic negotiations involving Israel with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman several times since Trump left the White House.

The source did not specify when the talks took place, and whether they took place before or after the start of the conflict in Gaza. But it included discussions about the process of normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which is a major diplomatic goal for both the administration of current US President Joe Biden and his predecessor Trump, according to Reuters news agency, citing the source.

Kushner, 43, has close ties to Saudi Arabia, which congressional investigators say invested $2 billion in his private equity fund, Affinity Partners, which Kushner established after leaving the White House, Reuters reported.

News that Kushner and the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia discussed a peace agreement, which US President Joe Biden also tried to broker, illustrates the importance that Republicans and Democrats alike place on the unstable Middle East, amid a very hotly contested presidential election.

The talks indicate how Trump might manage the crisis in the region, if voters return him to power. It also renews questions about whether Kushner’s financial relations with Riyadh could affect American policy, if his father-in-law returns to the White House.
