About the Europa League
Founded in 1971 and formerly known as the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Europa League consists of a league phase followed by a knockout phase. 36 teams participate in the tournament. Each team faces eight opponents in the league phase. The top eight go directly to the round of 16, while teams placed 9-24 meet in a play-off to qualify further. The teams placed in place 9-16 will be seeded and will meet the teams in place 17-24. It is the second highest ranked European club tournament after the Champions League and the winner of the Europa League qualifies for next season’s Champions League. Please read more about the new format on UEFA’s website.
1904, on June 26, IF Elfsborg was formed by 19 boys in their early teens. The association’s name was then “Borås Football Team”.
In 1906, the association became a member of the National Sports Confederation and the name was changed at the same time to IF Elfsborg.
