Supporters of Evo Morales lifted the blockade after nine days and the Government of Bolivia reported “great losses”

La Paz.-Indigenous people related to former Bolivian president Evo Morales (2006-2019) set up a road blockade in the highlands of La Paz that they maintained for nine days, a measure that according to the Government of Luis Arce generated “large” economic losses estimated at about $376,602.

The indigenous people who belong to the Túpac Katari Peasant Federation, known as ‘red ponchos’, blocked the road to the town of Copacabana, bordering Peru and hosting tourists, to demand the resignation of President Arce.

After nine days they withdrew from the road and yesterday they walked to the center of La Paz with the aim of recovering their headquarters, occupied by the Government, and to demand that the authorities that the four detained during the road blockade be released.

“We ask for the immediate withdrawal of the Police from our headquarters because it is not from the Government, it is from the people, and we demand the annulment of the sentence against four of our brothers,” Enrique Mamani, leader of the ‘ponchos, told the EFE news agency. reds’.

About 200 police officers waited for the protesters with riot gear and around the indigenous federation headquarters building they placed metal fences that prevented their passage, forcing them to stay in the central streets for a few hours.

For its part, the Government reported this Wednesday that the seven days of walking through the Bolivian highlands of former president Evo Morales (2009-2019) and his followers, in addition to the roadblocks of the ‘red ponchos’, left economic losses of 2,606 .675 bolivianos (376,602 dollars).

“Those are the great losses of seven days of march and nine days of blockade,” reported Germán Veliz, the general director of Vías Bolivia, the government agency that manages the country’s highways.

On the highway that connects La Paz and Oruro there was a walk led by the former Bolivian ruler with thousands of his followers, from September 17 to 23, to demand that he be enabled as a candidate for the 2025 elections, despite having a ban constitutional.

The Government of Luis Arce denounced the day before that former President Morales’ plan is to “convulse” the country, given the warning from him and his followers to begin a national road blockade from September 30 if the president does not changes his ministers, accusing them of “narcos, corrupt and drug users.”

Arce and Morales have been estranged since the end of 2021, and are fighting a long battle for control of the Movement towards Socialism (MAS) party and the Executive.Infobae.
