A Oura announced today the Oura Ring 4which features a thinner design, sensors with improved accuracy and more sizes. Furthermore, the Oura app received a complete redesign to better organize the series of new features introduced.
At first, the Oura Ring 4 doesn’t look very different from the previous model — but the changes are, for example, in the new finish titanium and also in a completely round format, without a flat edge. Perhaps most notable is that the sensors they are no longer protruding, as they have been lowered so that they are flatter, improving comfort during use.
Oura is also expanding its ring size options, making it available in variations ranging from 4 to 15 — previously, it was limited to sizes 6 to 13.
The biggest changes, however, are at the tip of the software. Oura says its new algorithm helps solve a big problem with smart rings: the fact that everyone’s fingers are different and the sensors may not be pulling data from the sweet spot.
To address this, the new algorithm increases the number of signal paths from 8 to 18 — enabling it to choose which signal is best at any given time. In addition to better accuracy, the company says the new algorithm also improves battery life to up to eight days, depending on ring size.
As for the redesigned app, it now has three sections: Today (Today), Vital Signs (Vitals) and My Health (My Health). The first shows a dynamic summary of your biometric data depending on the user’s time and health goals; the second allows users to delve deeper into metrics and scores, while the third focuses on long-term trends.
Oura is also revamping the metric for calculating daytime stress and has also added automatic activity detection for 40 different types of exercise.
O Oura Ring 4 is available for pre-sale at US$350. Oura also confirmed that the price of your subscription ($6/month or $70/year) will not increase.
